Michael Tatham

Expertise

Michael has experience in shipping litigation and enforcement, as well as the judicial sale of ships and other maritime property. Michael also has experience in shipping casualty response and matter handling.

Michael’s practice also includes customs, logistics and supply chain related claims as well as non-contentious work surrounding shipping and logistics, including commercial/contractual drafting and industry related advice. In addition, Michael has a keen interest in international trade law and sanctions compliance.

Experience

Michael’s experience includes:

  • acting on behalf of ship owners, charterers and international banks in the arrest of vessels and associated vessels
  • providing international sanctions compliance advise and advise on defence export control regulations
  • acting on behalf of a wholesale distributor in relation to unpaid duty drawback claims for the export of alcohol products, and advice related to the import and export of alcohol and tobacco products.
  • appearing in the Federal Court of Australia on behalf of a shipping line in relation to a claim for release of cargo without production of a bill of lading
  • assisting insurers and shipping lines in relation to cargo damage claims
  • assisted in defending a claim for the importation of counterfeit goods in to South Africa on behalf of an international importer in the Durban commercial crimes court
  • assisting various local and international logistics and forwarding companies in the recovery and defence of goods in transit claims, including hijacked goods, lost goods and damage to goods at various stages of the transport process.
