Holding Redlich national managing partner awarded an AO

National managing partner of national commercial law firm Holding Redlich, Ian Robertson, was appointed as an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AO) in the honours announced by the Governor-General on Australia Day. 


His appointment is in recognition of his distinguished service to the arts, particularly the Australian film industry and screen production sector, and to the law.

Mr Robertson joined the Melbourne office of Holding Redlich as a senior associate in 1989, became a partner of the firm in 1990, and relocated to Sydney to establish the firm’s Sydney office in 1994. He became the National Managing Partner of Holding Redlich in July 2015. He practises principally in corporate, media and regulatory law and has been involved in a number of significant M&A transactions in the media sector and has also been in charge of a number of major court cases including two appeals before the Full High Court.

Mr Robertson has held board positions in six State and Federal Government agencies during the past 30 years including Film Australia, Screen Australia, the Australian Broadcasting Authority, and Film Victoria. He was also a director and Chair of the screen industry body Ausfilm which promotes Australia internationally as a production destination, and he is a board member of the ASX-listed production and distribution group Beyond International. He is currently the President of the Board of the Victorian Government screen agency Film Victoria, a positon he has held since 2011.

He has also advised the Federal Government on policies affecting the screen production sector, in particular on the system of tax incentives known as tax offsets.  These incentives are generally considered to be the most attractive and efficient offered by any country.

During his seven years as a board member of the Australian Broadcasting Authority from 1997 to 2004 Mr Robertson was actively involved in a number of important issues of that period including the cash for comment inquiry, local content on regional television, new FM radio licences in Australian capital cities, and the introduction of digital television.

Commenting on his award Mr Robertson said: “I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to assist the Australian screen production industry to achieve local and international success while also performing a leadership role in a successful national commercial law firm. I am also very fortunate that the law firm I lead, Holding Redlich, has its best years ahead of it.”
