Dual citizenship crisis: four MPs resign after court rules Katy Gallagher ineligible
A high court decision ruling Labor senator Katy Gallagher ineligible to sit in parliament has triggered four MPs - including three Labor MPs - to resign over dual citizenship issues. In a litmus test for both Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten the four MPs will now fight to retain their seats in a “super Saturday” string of by-elections in states (09 May 2018).  

Human Rights Commission pushes back against Peter Dutton bid for more powers
The Human Rights Commission has lobbied against expanding the home affairs minister and department’s powers to make visa cancellation decisions without a merits review and even called for them to be wound back. Home affairs minister already has too much discretion over cancellation of visas and tribunal process should remain, groups say (12 May 2018). 

Big new push to maintain a Big Australia
A new trinity of big business, the Australian Council of Trade Unions and ethnic community groups have joined forces in signing and releasing a joint “National Compact on Permanent Migration” document to stop our migrant intake from being slashed (04 May 2018).
