Sylvia has considerable experience as both a solicitor and barrister in New South Wales, bringing together both advisory and advocacy expertise.

Sylvia specialises in workplace relations matters, including advising and appearing in relation to workplace disputes and litigation in the Fair Work Commission, Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, Federal Court of Australia, Australian Human Rights Commission, Industrial Relations Commission of NSW and the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal.  Sylvia has acted in a wide range of matters including unfair dismissals, general protections claims, underpayment matters and discrimination proceedings. In the NSW jurisdiction, Sylvia has advised and represented a range of state government agencies in relation to termination of employment and industrial disputes.

In addition, Sylvia has particular expertise in administrative law, having regularly appeared as an advocate before the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal conducting a range of administrative review hearings including in relation to licensing applications and the release of government information.

Sylvia also has expertise in conducting complex and sensitive workplace investigations involving public interest disclosures, victimisation and workplace bullying and harassment complaints.

Experience

Sylvia's experience includes:

  • advising and conducting termination of employment litigation for employers in the state and federal jurisdictions including unfair dismissals and victimisation claims
  • advising on and defending general protections litigation in the Fair Work Commission and Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia
  • managing and appearing in discrimination proceedings in state and federal jurisdictions
  • managing and defending industrial disputes and litigation before the NSW Industrial Relations Commission in relation to the interpretation and classification of work
  • regularly appearing in the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal in reviews of NSW government licensing decisions
  • managing and conducting large complex and sensitive workplace investigations.
