Shayla brings a strong background in commercial litigation with a current focus on property and leasing disputes. She regularly advises and represents clients in matters involving property disputes, retail and commercial leasing and complex contractual and commercial issues.

She has experience managing proceedings across multiple jurisdictions and has instructed counsel in the Local, District, and Supreme Courts of New South Wales, as well as the Federal Court of Australia.

Shayla is recognised for her strategic insight, precision, and ability to deliver practical, solutions-focused advice in high stakes and time sensitive disputes.

Experience

Shayla’s experience includes:

  • Representing the world’s largest shopping centre owner in a range of retail leasing disputes and other litigious matters
  • Advising and acting for landlords, property managers and leading developers in the retail and commercial property sectors
  • Acting for retail landlords in recovering possession of leased premises and pursuing former tenants for rental arrears
  • Acting for a major institutional property asset manager in successfully defending a claim before the NSW Court of Appeal involving the doctrine of frustration arising from COVID-19 impacts on a commercial lease
  • Acting in a successful appeal to the Full Federal Court of Australia in a complex misleading or deceptive conduct claim involving the sale of a major shopping centre, resulting in a favourable judgment and an award of costs
  • Advising on and managing winding up and bankruptcy proceedings.
